The function of physical education in the prevention of peer violence in schools

Abstract
In this paper, we analyze the function of physical education in the prevention of peer violence in schools. Peer violence as a very current and all-pervasive social problem represents any intentional, repeated, unprovoked negative or verbal action and has hostile intentions, upsets the victim, causes pain and stress. Through the prism of research dealing with peer violence, is observed an alarming situation and the need to search more effective measures to prevent this social phenomenon. In fight against peer violence, the function of school is recognized as an institution which can act in a planned, organized and systematic manner in the direction of reducing violence among its students. The potential in reducing the aggressive tendencies of students behavior is found in physical education. It seems that classes of physical education can represent a space for acquiring basic humanistic values, for creating non-violent communication and good interpersonal relations. The educational function of physical education stands out, which main goal is the students socio-emotional development, learning non-violent conflict resolution, respect, patience, empathy, acceptance, altruism and the development of team spirit. In addition to the theoretical perspective of this ethical principles that are incorporated within the physical education curriculum, empirical verification is necessary in order to influence the reduction of peer violence in schools. Future research should be oriented towards the examination of preventive strategies of peer violence in schools, then the empirical determination of the current situation about peer violence in schools, as well as a more detailed analysis of the connection between physical education and peer violence.
